Most people arrive to Tulum by flying into the Cancun airport CUN or the new Tulum airport TQO and then driving up or down highway 307 to Tulum.  The drive from the Cancun airport to Tulum is approximately 1.5 hours without stops.  The drive from Tulum airport is about 30-40 minutes. Alternatively you can also fly into Cozumel and take the ferry to Playa del Carmen, then travel down highway 307 to Tulum from Playa del Carmen.  The ferry from Cozumel runs every 20 minutes and the ride to Playa del Carmen is about 45 minutes.  Buses, shuttles, taxis and rental cars are readily available at the airport or in Play del Carmen.

Transportation from Cancun to Tulum or from the Tulum airport to Tulum. The best (cheapest) way to get to Tulum from the Cancun or Tulum airport is to have a friend pick you up!  If you can't do that, then you have a number of options ranging from the fastest, by taxi or private car, or the cheapest, which is by ADO bus from the Cancun airport to Tulum. There are also shuttles and rental cars available at the Cancun and Tulum airport.  Book in advance for the smoothest travel experience.

A taxi from the Cancun airport to downtown Tulum should be between $2500 and $3000 pesos.  A taxi to the Cancun airport from Tulum can be a little less expensive, from $2200-$2800. The number of people in your party and the location in Tulum for pick-up and drop-off, are factors for the exact rates. The average taxi can accommodate 2-3 people. You will pay a bit more if you are going to or from the Tulum beach hotel zone, or more remote jungle locations and for groups.

Yes!  You can now fly directly to Tulum at the new Tulum airport TQO!  It is about a 30 minute drive from the airport to downtown Tulum.

Thee is no Uber service in Tulum.  You may be able to get an Uber from the Cancun airport to Tulum but not back to the airport from Tulum.  There are Uber drivers in Playa del Carmen and Cancun, but not in Tulum as of 2024.  The taxi union in the area is very strong and is opposed to Uber in Tulum, but there has been some recent potential for Uber to be available in Tulum.  Stay tuned.

Taxis in Tulum are expensive, you do need to agree to the rate for the ride before you get into a taxi.  Rates can vary from driver to driver and during peak hours, rates can be higher.  As an example, you will pay more for a ride on the beach road-hotel zone on a busy night because you will be sitting in a lot of traffic. Time is money for the taxis.

Yes, taxis in Tulum are generally safe, especially during daylight hours.  Most drivers are professional, but there are exceptions. After hours and late night we recommend you ride with a partner, especially if you are out very late or in a remote area. There have been instances late at night or early in the morning hours where people have had issues with drivers, extorting high fares or in some cases assault or leaving people.  These are rare and the exception, especially if you use some common sense.

It is safe to walk in Tulum at night on the main avenue and well lit streets.  Proceed with caution and travel with someone else if you are getting off the main avenue later into the evenings and wee hours of the morning. If you are going into areas and neighborhoods not as well lit and late at night be on guard.
